The President is the official head of Nepal, while the Prime Minister is the leader of the nation.
The 54-year-old Nepal’s parliament is headed by the first woman Bhandari, led by the party’s deputy leader, Kharga Prasad Oli, and led by a coalition government. Nepal’s new constitution, adopted last month, required the appointment of a new president.
Nepal’s first female treasurer was one of the leading women’s rights activists and politicians in Nepal who pushed for the protection of their rights under the new constitution. The document states that one-third of the members of parliament must be women and the president or vice-president must be a woman.
Since her husband Madan Bhandari was killed in a car accident in 1993, she has become more involved in politics and has become a leading political figure.
Bhandari, the first woman in Nepal’s parliament, has been active in politics since childhood. According to CPN (UML), Bhandari joined politics from Bhojpur in 1986 as an activist of CPN (ML) Youth League. He was in charge of ANNFSU’s Eastern Zone Committee from 1989 to 1989. However, after gaining party membership from CPN (ML) in 1970, his active political journey began. After finishing school-level studies, Bhandari Mahendra Morang was admitted to the Adarsh Multiple Campus, where he was elected Treasurer of the Student Union. She also played a key role as chairperson of GEFONT’s women’s wing since 1993, before being elected a member of the CPN (UML) Central Committee in 1996.
In a by-election in January 1994, Bhandari, the first woman in Nepal’s parliament, was elected to the first parliament, due to the death of her husband, the current member from Kathmandu-1, where she defeated former Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai. In the 1994 general election, he was elected from Kathmandu-2, defeating House Speaker Daman Nath Dhungana. He served as environment and population minister in a coalition government led by Prime Minister Lokendra Bahadur Chand in 1996.
In the 1999 general election, he was re-elected from Kathmandu-2. He lost the 2008 Constituent Assembly elections and was later nominated under the proportional representation system. He served as the Minister of Defense in the cabinet of Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal. In the 2013 elections, he was re-elected under the proportional representation system. When he was elected Vice-Chairperson of the CPN (UML) at the 8th General Conference in Butwal, his influence in the party was strong. Bhandari, who was re-elected vice-chairperson at the party’s next general conference, is considered a close confidante of party chairman and prime minister KP Sharma Oli.
He led many protests against the then King Gyanendra of Nepal, which eventually ended his authoritarian rule and restored democracy.
Bhandari is the second president of Nepal since the Himalayan nation became a republic, ending a century-old monarchy.
In 2004, Ram Baran Yadav was elected the first President. He was to hold the post for two years. But due to differences between the political parties, it took seven years to draft and adopt the constitution.
